Not Just an Autism Mom

Not Just an Autism Mom

Strategies for the Intentional Mama

Our Story

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a mom!

I wanted a large family, a dozen kids at least, and I wanted to be a perfect parent; the kind that everyone wanted to be. It was great because there are so many books available to tell me exactly how to do everything right and I had pretty much nailed it after my first year of parenting! Then 15 months later, my second child was born.

Cole was an easy baby to start with, but before long it became obvious that he wasn’t going to support my mother-of-the-year timeline.

He refused to eat solid foods on schedule, he had no intention of using sign language and toilet training was NOT.GOING.TO.HAPPEN!!! I didn’t know it, but I was about to become an Autism Mom.

When Cole was 2 ½ years old,
he was diagnosed with Autism.

I started reading books about how he would never talk or want to be touched and I panicked! I signed him up for all the therapies and specialist appointments that were available. I was sure that one of these professionals with all the capital letters behind their name was going to ride in on a white horse and FIX my son. That didn’t happen.

What did happen
was a transformation
in me.

One day at another team meeting, I was surrounded by therapists all asking me questions about Cole. A door opened in my mind and i crossed over into a universe where I realized that when it comes to Cole, I AM THE PROFESSIONAL. Every therapy, every support, every intervention depends on the knowledge and ability that I have to reach out to my son. From that day onward, I was empowered to make changes in Coles life, to support him to live to his full potential. I want every mother, an Autism Mom or not, to know that they can equip themselves to be the most important person in their child’s life.

About Katie

My identity as a mother has so many different facets. I am a biological mother, an adoptive mother of embryos, adolescents and an adult. I have also become a pseudo mother to several children and youth with disabilities and other social challenges outside of my home. I always wanted to be a mother to many children, but I had no idea how God would use that calling in so many different ways. I want to share with you everything I have learned as an intentional Mama so that you can apply my parenting hacks and learn some things the easy way!

Somewhere in my journey as a mother I learned how important it is to be an active participant in cultivating our own good health and the health of our families. I don’t do anything half-way, so I became a Natural Health Consultant. Over the years I have made some changes in our household to improve our health; some simple things like natural cleaners and some have been more radical, like sugar-free November!  Stay tuned for a link to sign up for a free simple health conversions PDF!
